Last weekend, Pennine CRC continued an established tradition of British success at the Setúbal Cup with a win documented and celebrated (with footage of games and interviews) by FPCanoagem TV…

Additional coverage of Pennine in action:

Pennine Canoe and Rowing Club has had an active Canoe Polo scene for more than 20 years. Youngsters and senior players alike train on the River Calder in Mirfield and at in Pool Sessions at Dewsbury Sports Centre, with teams competing at all levels of both the national and regional league structures.

Pennine’s A team competes in the highly competitive National league 1 and contains players who are either current or former members of the Great Britain National teams. Pennine members have competed at European and World Championships.

To claim the 2016 Setúbal Cup, the team contested games over two days with top teams from Portugal, The Netherlands and Spain. The win continues a tradition of British success in the event, with Meridian Canoe Club having won in 2000 and 2004.

Pennine Canoe Polo place 10th in the Gekko International, Belgium

Pennine A, current national league runners up, were placed 10th in the Gekko International competition in Gent, Belgium.

The team faced a tough initial group stage where they got a good win against the Holland U21 national side 7-3 before adding another win against club team Triton 9-3.

The next match saw Pennine challenge the ex-European Club champions Conde Sur Vire from France. The Yorkshire club put in a great performance that ended in a narrow defeat 3-2 in the dying seconds of the game from leading the French side 2-1 at half time. This meant that Pennine had to beat the current British Champions to progress to the top 8 teams. After a hard fought battle with 2 sin bins from Pennine players for highly debatable technical offences the reigning British Champions prevailed to win 6-1.

This unfortunately put the Yorkshire club out of the competition to place them 10th overall.

The result was a little disappointing bearing in mind that the two tournament finalists were the same two teams that beat Pennine in the group stages. However the team is young and looking to progress and improve on their recent status as “the 2nd best team in Britain”, ready for next season.

We hope to have the landing stage finishes to enable sessions to take place over the summer.

We are going to install three containers on site one for rowing, one for racing, and one for polo and recreation.

The rowing section is rapidly Gathering a fleet of rowing boats thanks to generous donations from clubs across the country and British Rowing.

Polo Players have started to plan installing training facilities on sites.

All in all there is a lot of work being done to create a top class facility worthy of the club and region.

Pennine A start their title defence

Pennine A & B polo teams started their Yorkshire League Season last night. Players were trying to remember when Pennine last didn’t win the league. The A team’s start suggested whenever it was it’s likely there is another on the way. 7-4, 1-0, and 4-1 victories over FOA B, FOA A and White Rose A made for a reasonable start even if the team never really got out of 2nd gear.

The B team on the other hand still believe they are as good as they used to think they were. Disappointingly throwing away (literally) half time lead over FOA B to lose 7-2 and 2-1 defeat to rivals White Rose A, again conspiring in their own downfall passing to the opposition under their own unguarded net. The evening finished well with a 6-1 victory over FOA A and 12-3 victory over White Rose B. It seemed that for the first two games the team just didn’t turn up!

A Team:- Chris Newbury, Michael Smith, David Edwards, Andy Davision, James Longley and Chris Quinn

B Team:- Daniel Bailey, Andrew Carden, Robert Edwards, Matthew Street, Tim Bland and Peter Beverley
